Man gets 44 years in prison for Somers killing tied to Outlaws biker gang

SOMERS — A judge sentenced a former New Britain man tied to an Enfield-based motorcycle gang to 44 years in prison Wednesday in the 2021 shooting death of Jason Comes, 38, of Wilbraham, Mass., in Somers.
Judge Tejas Bhatt sentenced Timothy Lange, 36, who was found guilty by a jury in March of felony murder, kidnapping and tampering with evidence.
A motive in the killing of Comes was never mentioned during the trial and was not disclosed at the packed sentencing Wednesday at state Superior Court in Rockville.
“Ever since jury selection, I’ve been thinking about what happened … and why. It’s at the core of everything that happened here. It’s an important question,” Bhatt said. “At least one person who knows the answer to that question. It’s heartbreaking we did not get an answer to that.”
Family members who spoke at the sentencing spoke of a loving father, husband, cousin and coach who always found time to help out and be there.
Comes, who owned his own HVAC company, crossed paths with Lange and another man, Zachary Apt, at Mardi Gras 2 in East Windsor on Aug. 3, 2021, according to police.
Surveillance video from the bar showed Comes leaving shortly after midnight with a group that included Lange and Apt, police said.
From there, footage shows a motorcycle believed to belong to Lange, followed by the victim’s Mercedes and Lange’s pickup truck, which was driven by Apt, traveling toward Interstate 91 and exiting in Enfield, according to an arrest warrant.
State police allege the group arrived at a property on Moody Road that was identified as a clubhouse associated with the Knights of Sin motorcycle club, which is connected to the Outlaws Motorcycle Club.
State police said that they believe Comes was “beaten, bound with tape on his ankles, and bound at the wrists with his own belt and tape” and later “fatally shot in his vehicle” on the club’s Moody Road property, according to the warrant.
Comes’ vehicle later was found abandoned in a field off that road, his body in the rear passenger seat, according to the warrant.
Apt, 34, of Southington, was charged earlier this year by state police in Comes’ killing.
