Fire under investigation at west Springfield building linked to Hells Angels

Spingfield Fire Department (SFD) responded to a reported fire at a small building in west Springfield that has allegedly been used in the past as headquarters for a Springfield chapter of the notorious Hells Angels Motorcycle Club.
The fire was reported around 8:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1, and fire crews arrived on the scene in about two minutes, Eric Latimer, division chief of fire operations, said Sept. 2. There were no injuries.
The fire was extinguished and the incident remains under investigation by the Bureau of Fire Prevention, Latimer said.
The property at 811 S. West Ave. has a unique Springfield history. In 2022, in connection with an investigation into a drive-by shooting, the property was described as being used for the headquarters of a Springfield chapter of Hells Angels, according to previous Daily Citizen reporting. Officials with the Springfield Police Department and the FBI searched the property in 2022 for a suspect in connection with the shooting. Authorities said the building was a known hangout for the motorcycle club.
The two-story building has a bar and dance floor space on the main level, with two 1-bedroom apartments with external access upstairs, according to previous reporting. It also has a rich history in baseball, as it used to be the concession stand for Memorial Stadium, the home of the Springfield Cubs, a farm team for the Chicago Cubs.
