NEWTON, N.C. — A shooting at a motorcycle clubhouse left one person dead and another in critical condition early Sunday morning, according to the Newton Police Department.
Two people were shot at the Outlaw Motorcycle Club House on 1605 North Main Avenue around 2:09 a.m., police said. One victim died from their injuries at the hospital. The second victim was airlifted to Atrium Health Medical Center in Charlotte and remains in critical condition.
When officers arrived, they were met with about 30 individuals who were believed to be armed, Maj. Aaron Turk with the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office told WCNC Charlotte.
The shooting possibly involved a dispute between two motorcycle gangs, according to the spokesperson, who added that the establishment has been an area of concern for suspected gang activity in the past. That prompted a larger response, bringing agencies from as far as Iredell County.
Police have not released the names of the victims while they work to notify families.
No arrests have been made as of Sunday morning.
Newton Police say the scene is now secure and there is no immediate threat to the public. However, they are asking people to stay away from the area while the investigation continues. People in the area should to remain moderately cautious, as reprisals sometimes occur in public following gang-related violence, officials said.
The shooting comes one week after a gang-related mass shooting killed a man and hurt 11 other people at a Catawba County house party. Eight people were arrested within a week and charged with numerous crimes related to the planned attack.
Sunday’s shooting is not believed to be related to last week’s mass shooting, Turk said.
On Sunday, multiple law enforcement agencies are assisting with the investigation at the motorcycle clubhouse, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, police departments from Conover, Hickory, Maiden, Longview, and Claremont, Iredell County Sheriff’s Office, Catawba County Emergency Management, Catawba County EMS, and the Newton Fire Department.
Police say they will provide updates as more information becomes available for release.
