CFSEU: Motorcycle gang ride through Nelson meant to project criminal influence

A planned increase in outlaw motorcycle gang members in the Nelson area this weekend is more than just a recreational ride, according to B.C.’s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU).
The Nelson Police Department issued a warning Wednesday notifying residents to expect more than 50 outlaw motorcycle gang members in and around the city from Friday through Sunday, with additional police resources deployed to maintain public safety.
CFSEU spokesperson Sgt. Sarbjit Sangha said the ride is organized by support clubs connected to the Hells Angels and may also include Hells Angels members.
“I’m not going to give them any notoriety by mentioning their names,” said Sangha. “These are support clubs that are coming into Nelson, and it may also involve members from Hells Angels Motorcycle Club in this ride.”
Sangha said the ride’s purpose goes beyond a weekend outing.
“This is one of those rides that are organized by support clubs to Hells Angels and the meaning behind it is to fly their flag, let the community know in that area that they are actually running that area. And this refers to criminal activity,” said Sangha.
She said similar events in other areas have at times led to enforcement actions for offences including excessive speeding, dangerous driving, licensing violations and motorcycle equipment infractions, as well as drug and firearms possession. She said that is why the Nelson Police Department advised the public of the planned gathering.
“The NPD wants the community to be aware that there is a potential that the public safety may be jeopardized because these individuals are coming to town,” she said. “It’s not a given that these things will happen, but we have seen that in the past.”
Sangha stressed that such gatherings are usually peaceful and do not automatically pose a danger to the public, but said residents should report suspicious or criminal behaviour if they see it.
“I would say most of these rides are peaceful. They go about their business and don’t bother anybody,” Sangha said. “But if you do see something that you consider suspicious and criminal, then you should call your local police.”
The Nelson Police Department said it is working with other law enforcement and intelligence agencies across the province throughout the weekend to maintain public order.
