iPhones contain a handy feature called Find My iPhone that lets you locate, lock or even erase your phone remotely from other gadgets or a computer. You can lock or destroy all the personal information on your phone in case it’s lost or stolen, so thieves don’t get their hands on it. You can turn on Find My iPhone by opening the Settings App and clicking the iCloud section.
Find My iPhone for iPhones running iOS 7 or later includes a feature called Activation Lock that makes it difficult for criminals to sell stolen phones. That’s because Activation Lock requires the owner’s iCloud password to disable the Find My iPhone feature. They also can’t erase or reactivate the phone without the owner’s password.
Apple makes it easy for you to tell if the phone you’re about to buy is stolen or not using its Activation Lock website. Just type the serial number or Device IMEI number into the page and it will tell you if Activation Lock is still engaged. If it is, then you should ask the seller to enter the iCloud password and disable it so that you’ll be able to set it up with your own account. If the seller can’t enter the code because they don’t have it, then odds are the phone is stolen and you should steer clear.
The serial number and IMEI are located under the Settings app. If you’re buying in person, you can click General and then select About to see all the phone’s information. If the thief is locked out of the phone because it’s in Lost Mode, they probably won’t even be able to access this info for you.
